Ahh.......Fall is here, one of my favorite seasons of the year! In most of our parks routines begin to change, shifts are adjusting, your taking vacation, maybe attending some training, your picnickers and swimmers are fewer, and your hikers, and hunters are on the increase. Did I just say hunters? How many of you interact with your hunters? Do you stop in a hunter parking lot and chat with those using public hunting facilities, share information about the area, answer questions about hunting in your area, or hunting in general? Are you comfortable talking to hunters?
Attention non-hunters - knowledge is power! Learning about the sport, stay up on the latest rules and regulations, and knowing the latest DNR initiatives will help others perceive you as the expert! Most of the information you need is right at your finger tips!

Beginners Guide to Bow Hunting

Hang out with a hunter, pick their brain, ask to see their equipment? Chances are, at least one person in your park is a hunter? Ask questions, learn terminology, talk to them about their recent hunting adventures - I guarantee you will learn something new and they will love sharing!
I am not a hunter, but I have spent more than 20 years talking to hunters as if I had knowledge of the sport. I had the good fortune of working with Rangers who were hunters and who loved to share their knowledge. I subscribed to Field and Stream, before the Internet became the hot spot for knowledge. I read and highlighted the Guide to Hunting and Trapping each season. I reviewed all the hunting regulations, for me, a law enforcement officer, this was a necessity, but for you this knowledge lends to your credibility as you conduct voluntary compliance or answer hunter questions.
Just because a hunter has a gun or a bow in hand, does not mean you need to run the other way. Use caution, know how to recognize that a firearm or a Bow is in a safe position. Know how to recognize safe handling of weapons. If you encounter unsafe hunters, poachers, etc - these are true law enforcement situations, your situational awareness training should kick in and your next call should be to Natural Resources Police.
Deer Archery Season opened Sept 6th in Maryland, so lets work on building some of your knowledge regarding hunting with a focus on Archery hunting.
