Wow, I can't believe 2013 is drawing to a close, and the training division is already looking ahead to training in the Spring of 2014.
Some training to look forward to:
Webinars! We held our first webinars, on Recreation Trail Grants, Time Card Coding, and Introduction to Custom Guide - our feedback from the surveys we have sent out following these webinars has been helpful and as we build on these opportunities we will work to take all your comments to heart in making adjustments. In 2014 you can look forward to more Webinars on Nuts and Bolts topics such as: Reclass Packages, Accident and Injury paperwork refreshers, Basic Procurement, as well as some Trail Training, and another Introduction to Custom Guide.
On-line Classes - So far we have only placed our 2 hour Blood Borne Pathogen program on-line, which is the basic training for new hires and seasonal personnel. In 2014 you will have additional classes online through Mindflash.
Coming January 2014 -
EMS Annual In-service - 2 hours of this class will be online and completion will be required prior to your classroom session. When you arrive at your classroom session you will take the exam for the class and the rest of the class will be devoted to skills training - with scenarios added into this 4 hour session. Your total in-service credit for EMS Annual In-service will be 6 hours for EMR and 4 hours of CPR.
Annual Blood Borne Pathogen Update - This is required for all classified employees and in the past has either been done when you did your EMR training or you sat in on a seasonal training. This Annual update will be available online this year.
Portable Fire Extinguisher Training - This is a new training session required by OSHA. All employees who work on sites where extinguishers are on site will need to complete this training. This will be approx. 1 hour in length. It will also be an on-line class that you can complete in a self-paced manner.
For your Seasonal Staff Training
Blood Borne Pathogen (Initial) will remain online for your use with seasonal personnel and volunteers. This course requires follow-up with the acceptance/declination form for those employees who are eligible for pre-exposure Hepatitis B vaccinations. We hope to have a group training option using this same presentation for those of you that would like to train all of your seasonal employees on this topic at one time.
Sexual Harassment Training will be available online for your seasonal employees this year. We hope to build on last year's session and develop a comprehensive on-line class that will be approx 1-1.5 hours in length. This course will be a basic compliance course which reviews our policy and applies it to situations that may be encountered, with solution and direction on how to handle these situations.
Driver Training - This course will give basic safety guide lines, as well as go over accident reporting guidelines, daily paperwork, and the required care of a State Vehicle for all drivers. There will be an emphasis on safe driving, seat belt usage,vehicle maintenance and cleaning, as well as daily paperwork etc.
Spring In-Service - the basics are online at this time and you may register for classes. We will be adding training, primarily electives over the next couple of months, so visit the site often. Your two mandatory sessions for this year are the Superintendent's Town Meeting and Performance Evaluation and Planning, which also includes a session on the Disciplinary Process.
Home Firearms Safety - This is the entry level course for those personnel who will be qualified as Wildlife Management (Firearms). Entry into the qualification program requires your manager's approval, however all personnel are welcome to take Home Firearms Safety Training. For those who enter the program this will be a required course, for those who would just like information on basic firearms safety - this is a 6 hour elective.

Survival Spanish 101 - Already posted at Deep Creek Lake and Martinak this spring. (3 hr. elective)
Coaching and Team Building - this class will develop basic coaching skills - 6 hr. elective - dates have not been posted yet.
Trail Design and Maintenance Sessions - 6 hour elective training - field training
Maintenance Training with Grainger - Electrical and Welding topics ( Elective)
Introduction to Search and Rescue - Already posted for Soldiers Delight in April ( 2 day training)
Heartsaver CPR and Basic First Aid - This class is for those personnel who want basic training, but do not want to maintain Emergency Medical Responder levels.
MPS Instructor Course - this is a with Manager Approval course - week long training on the basics of instruction from course development to public speaking and lesson plan creation. This is a week long course which has already been posted on the training website.
Custom Guide - Microsoft Office products online software training. There are sessions posted on the training website - each session is two weeks in length. Choose the software you would like to train on - complete the course and gain elective credit. This is self-paced on-line training that can be done on site. Watch for another how to use the site webinar in early January! Sign up for this training like you would any other training - you will be sent a link with instructions the Thursday before your training starts.
South Eastern Region- you can look forward to a Mock Search Training opportunity this Spring - dates and information will be coming out soon! We recently did a training of this kind in the Central Region, which the participants seemed to really enjoy. Thanks should go out to Natural Resources Police, Maryland State Police, Mid-Atlantic Search and Rescue Dogs, and Sykesville Volunteer Fire Department for their assistance in making this a very successful training activity.
A Holiday Gift that you might enjoy working on during the colder months before we get deep into the main training season and preparations for the summer season. There is a free online course that you can take in Time and Stress Management ( PRDV005) - once you complete the course - print out proof of training, send it to the training division and we will log this training into your records. (6 elective credits)

Uniforms now required!
Beginning in 2014 we will have a uniform requirement for all training sessions. Unless otherwise noted in the training announcements all participants in a training session must be in uniform, either casual or work uniform are acceptable. MCC Members would be in their standard work attire for training sessions.
