Our Fall training season is underway. We are offering classes in Active Shooter and Situational Awareness, Supervisory Training - coaching, First Aid and CPR, Annual EMS updates, Wildlife Firearms Classroom and Range Qualifications, and of course our self-paced e-learning on Mindflash.
Speaking of Mindflash - have you heard of "The Hub"? During 2015 we will be transitioning from Mindflash as our learning management system to the DBM managed LMS called The Hub. Many of you have seen emails from Gwen Schindler our Human Resources director inviting you to get your account set-up for the new Statewide Personnel System, and to check out some of the mini-training sessions already on the site. I encourage you to do this sooner rather than later - the more familiar you are with this new system, the easier your transition will be to this new learning management system. It is my understanding we will be posting our entire training calendar on the hub, both classroom and elearning and that you will be able to sign-up for classes, just like you do now on our training website, but it will be so much easier. There are still many questions to be answered, but this new system could give you easier access to course sign-up.

We have added an S212 Instructor to our team! Luke Mongrain is now qualified to certify in S212, so this Fall we offered our first Maryland Park Service sponsored S212 Class. The class filled up quickly, so plans are already in the works to schedule another class in March at Martinak State Park. We hope to certify a couple more instructors over the next couple of years to make this training even easier to obtain. We are in the process of revising our basic chainsaw class used for MCC, Seasonal Personnel, and Volunteers, so we have a standard course of instruction that can be used across the State for those who will be cutting already fallen trees. Remember to fall a tree according to our guidelines you must have completed all courses to become a Hazardous Tree Expert in the Maryland Park Service. This includes:

Roadside Tree Care Expert - Offered by Forestry
Urban Hazardous Tree Management - Offered by Forestry
Why so many First Aid and CPR Classes this Fall?
In June of 2014 we began training all MD Forest service personnel in Basic First Aid and CPR, I asked Regional Fire Manager, Ric Lillard, why Forestry was moving in this direction - see his response below:
The OSHA Logging Standard 29 CFR 1910.266 mandates that employees have CPR, First Aid and Blood Borne Pathogen training. In fact, this is what stimulated us to get our folks trained. I have a copy of a legal case history in which a MOSH enforcement action was contested by a tree trimming company. It was conducted by the Maryland Dept. of Labor, Office of Administrative Hearings. The tree trimming company claimed that they were not a logging company, therefore the OSHA standard did not apply to them; however, the Hearing Examiner referred to case law from the Maryland Court of Appeals that ruled that the Logging Standard applies to any employer who engages in cutting down trees.
I have included a link to the logging standard below, but basically it says that employees who are engaged in the felling, bucking, or limbing of trees must be trained in basic First Aid and CPR and Blood Borne Pathogens. Most of our personnel are currently trained as EMRs and maintain Health Care Provider level CPR. We conduct Blood Borne Pathogen training which all field personnel are required to complete annually. The Basic First Aid Classes and HeartSaver CPR classes are for our personnel who do not maintain these certifications currently, but operate chainsaws as part of their job duties. Therefore if your seasonal personnel, volunteers or your maintenance personnel operate chainsaws they must be trained in First Aid and CPR.
If you currently operate a chainsaw as part of your job you must have First Aid and CPR training. We will be offering these classes every Spring and Fall from here on out - as this training must be renewed every two years.

Supervisory Training - Coaching
We are offering this training twice this Fall. These are three day training sessions, where training is held once a week for three weeks. This training is highly interactive, filled with discussion and role- playing opportunities. Even those who had this training before found this training to be a great refresher! Here are a few of my favorite things… from your Coaching for Supervisors course:
*An opportunity for self-analysis in the realm of job coaching skills. In the parks, we are so often scrambling from problem to problem, too focused on the solution (and moving forward). We usually don’t have time to stop and think much about what we actually did during the process, or how we could do better next time. I was also able to re-utilize some of the material in the course to help my staff reflect on their own supervisory styles and strategies, and how each of those could present advantages or disadvantages depending on the situation.
*Validation and the ability to put a label on what we are already doing right. It was great to know that people outside of this agency have studied the art of coaching in a supervisory setting, and that some of the techniques that are already used at my park get proven results in many industries.
*New ideas to bring back to my park, and a comfortable role-playing setting to get my feet wet and try them with my peers. Ultimately, as supervisors we all have a mutual goal of helping create happy, productive, engaged employees; there are many different ways to reach that goal. This class helped me understand a different way of looking at “the coaching relationship” and I was able to take back concrete strategies for attainable improvements.

After taking the supervisor (coaching) Training.
I found the class to be very beneficial since it reinforced some of the supervisory technique and skills I have acquired over time through various experiences. In addition, I was also introduced to a substantial amount of new skills and techniques. It was good to share ideas and experience with other Supervisors & managers from around the state. The class was laid back yet professional and participation was encouraged to enhance the learning experience of the class. The instructor was very knowledgeable and did not hesitate to discuss or spend more time than originally allocated on a topic of interest that was generated from class discussion. I attended the 3 day Supervisor Coaching training class given by Robin Melton. I thought that the class may help me improve my supervising skills, although I came into the class thinking ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’. I was wrong. I received a lot of good information and I know it will help me with my future endeavors. The roll playing portion of the class really did help me understand the course content and provided information that I will use in being a better maintenance supervisor. I recommend this class to my fellow maintenance supervisors.
