Just a really short post with a couple of links that might be helpful if you wish to build some collaborative maps for your park. I am sure that many of you are already very well versed in the use of Google Maps, but just in case you are not I would like to share a couple of possibilities. Most of our waterfront parks have created maps showing the various features of their waterfront operations, but there are a ton of different ways you could use Google maps to share information and resources among your staff.
Just mapping out where all your shut-off valves for your water systems are located, or your ejection pits, or major power junction boxes could be very useful. One of the neat features of Google maps is that you can add notes to each point you identify on a map - wouldn't it be great if when you were trying to locate a water shut off - you could access a note that told you the size of water key needed, or "make sure you use this technique when opening this valve."
With a collaborative map - information can be added by many members of your staff and at the end of the day you might have a pretty useful map for a new ranger or a new technician, or your ever changing seasonal staff.
