Tailgate Tips - June 2020

Safety

We may have missed National Ladder Safety Month this year (it was in March), but it's never too late to utilize information provided by the American Ladder Institute! Check out their website below for access to several ladder safety training videos. Almost all employees in a park may need to use some type of ladder (step, articulated, extension, etc.) during their employment or at home. Do you think ALL of the staff members at your park can pass the test? Give it a try using the quizzes at the link below and see how your park staff does!

Medical

After a very mild winter and a wet spring, the 2020 tick forecast for the Northeast appears to promise above average numbers of the pests. While there will surely be a few reports of tick bites from park visitors, there will probably be far more instances from park employees. Check out page 53 of the MPS Pocket Guide below for a quick reminder of appropriate procedures for tick bite removal.

Customer Service

Today's customer service tip is very simple: Smile. This may seem like the most obvious way to approach a customer or visitor, but it's often one that we forget - especially after a difficult day. Smiling when initially seeing a visitor encourages a positive first impression and gives employees an approachable feel. According to some psychologists, smiling can even improve the mood of the person who is smiling! Smiling when you see a visitor is important, but it's also beneficial to smile when answering the phone or even typing out an email. Can hear the difference in your own voice when you smile while you talk? For most of us, there is an audible difference between speaking with a smile and speaking with a straight face (or a frown if you're feeling really grumpy). Personally, I even find that my writing style changes when I smile!

Maintenance

This time of year, there are many storms rolling through the region that can have a major impact on parks and facilities. Pruning trees that may cause issues during or after a storm can help prevent larger issues from occurring in the future. Make sure the appropriately trained staff members are doing the tree work, but also check out the helpful video links from Stihl below for some quick reminders!

Natural Resources

With the recent health crisis that spread across the globe, it seems as though some people have turned to hunting and fishing as a form of sustenance rather than just recreation. The article below, though written in 2019, shows how these sustaining practices can be enjoyable - even for those who have never tried before.
