Training Opportunities: Week of November 29, 2023

WILDLAND FIRE TRAINING ANNOUNCEMENT 

S-130 Basic Wildland Fire Training to be held at the Wicomico Demonstration Forest near Pittsville, MD. The training will take place from January 29 - February 1, 2024 and is open to all DNR employees and members of any MD Fire Department.

There will also be an opportunity for those who have completed the online training to enroll in the required field exercise. 

The Maryland Forest Service Fire Management Staff is offering the NWCG certified training course: S-130 – Wildland Firefighter. This course along with the prerequisite self-study courses make up the basic wildland fire courses and are also prerequisites for an entry level wildland firefighter, (FFT2). 

Dates:         Monday, January 29 through Thursday, February 1, 2024
Times:         Training will begin promptly at 0800 and end at 1630 each day.
                    (Lunch on your own)

The field day required to complete the S-130 (self-study) course will be offered on Thursday, February 1, 2024, in conjunction with the full in-person S-130 course – same location. Students will indicate which course they are registering for on the google form linked below.

Pre-course work to be completed prior to attending: Required for agency certification as a Maryland Wildland Firefighter I or to be eligible for NWCG Firefighter Type 2 (FFT2).

DBM Training for Supervisors

You can visit the Hub and fill out an interest indicator for DBM trainings. Twice a year virtual seminars for supervisors are offered on Bullying, PEPs, Communication Skills, Managing Medical Absences, and Discipline. DBM usually sends a registration link out a couple weeks in advance for their trainings.

When kids are worried about the environment, they can feel scared, overwhelmed, and even hopeless. This is called eco-anxiety. But what can we do about it?

How about turning Eco-Anxiety into Eco-Action? Eco-anxiety is a valid response to the real challenges our kids see around them. As adults, our job isn’t to make their concerns go away; it’s to help channel them into positive action. Join Stephanie and Nicole who will share research and practical ways on how Outdoor Learning and Environmental Action can help to manage Eco-Anxiety.

Stephanie Doyle, PhD, is the Education Programs Manager at Earth Rangers. Earth Rangers Homeroom supports K-6 educators in transforming children’s concerns about the environment into positive action through classroom resources, an eco clubs program, and the “Eco-Anxiety to Eco-Action” micro-credential. 

Nicole Forsyth is the Managing Director for Earth Rangers, USA, a nonprofit committed to instilling environmental knowledge, positivity, and the confidence to take action in every child in Canada and now the United States.
