Enhance your skills operating heavy equipment used for earth and material moving projects. The two-day class focuses on creating a safe construction environment while learning the skills for equipment use. Hands-on operation includes the most common types of equipment found on the job site including skid loaders, excavators, and backhoes. Successful class participants will receive a certificate of completion and CEU’s in addition to their acquired skills. Topics include:
Safely using equipment at a work site
Performing inspection and equipment startup
Identifying preventive maintenance issues
Practicing digging and trenching operations
Moving and grading materials
Loading vehicles and securing materials
*** Requirements: Participants must be 18 years of age or older and wear appropriate gear, including full length pants and boots, steel-toe preferred.

Artificial intelligence — what emerged as one of the hottest trends in 2023 is clearly here to stay. AI undoubtedly has promising use cases but can often feel overwhelming, as most discussions are full of buzzwords like LLM, GPT, machine learning, and NLP.
What is artificial intelligence and how will it affect parks & recreation? What are some practical use cases for artificial intelligence that are responsible and user-friendly?
How do I, as a parks & recreation professional, keep up with emerging trends? What are some of the challenges and ethical considerations I should think about related to adopting AI solutions in my department?
This session will explore AI's influence on resident experience, how administrative staff manages programs and facilities, and offer new ways to streamline park maintenance and operations.
MRPA Park Operations University

Mission Statement
Operation University’s goal is to develop future operations leaders to gain practical and applicable knowledge to improve operations and advance into leadership positions within their organization to provide successful parks and community services for sustainable, healthy lifestyles. Operations University will meet monthly to discuss diverse topics in various locations throughout the State allowing participants to expand their operational knowledge, leadership, and professionalism. Dynamic, industry experts will be featured each month with facilitated discussions that are related to topics relevant to operational success, sustainable practices, leadership, budget, and professional development. Projects and reading materials will be assigned between Operation Universities monthly meetings and collaborative discussions will enrich the participant's knowledge to bring innovative practices that can be implemented into departments across the State.
About the Program
This 8-session educational opportunity will help prepare our Operation Leaders for tomorrow with the foundational knowledge of our field. A mixture of classroom learning in conjunction with hands-on opportunities will provide Operation Professionals an opportunity for a wide range of professional development as the courses are designed to increase Operations knowledge and prepare attendees for the next step in their careers. Specialized classes will be hosted each month to include topics such as Snow and Ice Management, Playground Safety and Accessibility, Tree Management, Nutrient Management, Personnel Management, Personal and Professional Development, and Leadership Development. Locations for each of the classes are yet to be determined but will be located throughout Maryland including Western, Central, and Eastern Shore.
Participation is limited to 24 engaged and enthusiastic operations professionals who are looking for operation-related education and experience and approved by their supervisor, department, or division head.
Successful Graduates will receive acknowledgment at the MRPA Annual Conference (conference registration and accommodations are not included in the program fee), AND have an opportunity through this educational series to become certified in numerous areas such as:
Professional Fertilizer Applicator through the Maryland Department of Agriculture
Registered Pesticide Applicator Certificate
Playground Maintenance Technician
Certificate Program through NRPA
Chainsaw Use and Safety
Program Fee: $600.00 per registrant - includes facility and speaker’s fees, materials, lodging, and meals. Please note, that the conference is not included in the cost of the program. Ritch Stevenson Leadership Institute
Mission Statement
The Ritch Stevenson Leadership Institute aims to cultivate emerging leaders within the field of Recreation and Parks, empowering them to ascend to leadership roles within their respective organizations and contribute to the Maryland Recreation and Parks Association.
About the Program
The Leadership Institute will hold mandatory monthly sessions at various locations across Maryland to expose participants to diverse facilities and geographic intricacies. Each session will feature dynamic guest speakers and facilitated discussions on relevant leadership topics. Between sessions, participants will complete assigned projects and readings to enrich their learning experience.
Application/Schedule
Seeking professionals who are identified as “up-and-coming leaders” by their supervisor, department, or division head. A letter of recommendation from the immediate supervisor who is making the recommendation to attend is required. Participants must be MRPA members in good standing.
