Course Info:
This 3-day course will provide civilian supervisors with ethical foundations of the role of a supervisor, provide practical application of interpersonal communications skills, give insight into Human Resources issues that supervisors are confronted with such as FMLA, ADA, EEO, Time & Attendance, and Absenteeism. Participants will learn about the value and importance of inclusivity and diversity in the workplace. The course will also focus on employment law, to include the formal process for discipline action and grievances. Supervisors will learn the basic steps of problem solving, conflict management, preparing a performance evaluation; and learn team-building skills.
Who should attend? The target audience for this course is civilian first line supervisors and/or aspiring supervisors.
Who should not attend? Sworn law enforcement or correctional certified supervisors and/or administrators, those individuals are required to attend the mandated First Line Supervisor & Administrator Programs (35 hours).
Please Note, this course is not approved for in-service hours. The topics covered in the Civilian Supervisor course are similar to those in First Line Supervisor - students should not take both courses. Cost is $60 for client-agencies with a maximum of 5 students per class. Class will run 8:30am-4:30pm daily at the Public Safety Education & Training Center in Sykesville, MD.

October 25th - Portable Sawmill Operation and Training
Location: New Germany State Park
Our Forestry Partners are bringing a portable sawmill to New Germany to show us what potential and value there is in using these mills. Along with the Forestry Staff, Kendall Mott from Seneca Creek (where we have a similar sawmill) will demonstrate and discuss opportunities these mills can create at your facility. If you have some logs at your park you might want to mill, please coordinate that with John Ohler on ideal dimensions for your logs.
October 30th - Fall Interp Meeting
Location: Soldiers Delight
We hope you can join us at the 2024 Fall Interp Team Meeting & Potluck Luncheon! We encourage at least one person from each park/complex to participate, however all who are interested in interp are welcome. This meeting will be focused on discussions- from what went well for you this season to plans for future and what resources/support you would like to have from Headquarters.

November 7th - Interp Team Lunch & Learns - Mama Always Said Not To Pick Up Hitchhikers
Location: Virtual
Across the country tick-borne illnesses are on the rise. Visitor Experience Specialist Sammy Zambon will share the strategies Virginia State Parks are using to educate the public about avoiding ticks and the pathogens they carry. This session will include information on how the program was developed, how it has been implemented, and how it is going. Sammy will also share digital copies of the resources being used to educate the public.
November 12th - Interp Team Lunch & Learn - Birding 101
Location: Virtual
Do you wish you knew more about those intriguing-looking birds you spot in your backyard or on your walks? Did you know that bill size and shape is an excellent indicator for what family any given bird belongs to, as well as their diet? Field marks such as color, wing bars, bill shape, lines around the face, and other indicators are useful for identifying birds that look similar. Discuss all these topics and more with Matt Felperin, NOVA Parks’ roving naturalist in an essential guide to what you see and hear designed for both beginning birders and those who want to take their skills to the next level.
November 18 - Off-Season Spanish Training

Build your confidence in working with Spanish-speakers during various park and emergency focused scenarios. This training includes a short lecture reviewing translation resources and sessions of hands-on practice for working through the English/Spanish barrier with park patrons.
