2025 PACK TEST & REFRESHER


The Maryland Forest Service Fire Management Staff are accepting applications for the Work Capacity (Pack)

Test and RT-130 Annual Fireline Safety Refresher training for Agency and Wildland Fire Crew members.

All participants applying for the pack test will be required to complete the Health Screening Questionnaire

(HSQ). The HSQ will be evaluated by an agency administrator to determine if medical clearance is required

prior to the Pack test. Participants will also be required to sign an Informed Consent form the day of the test.

All candidates must apply online. The Pack Test will have 3 time slots available at 0900, 1000, & 1100 and you

should arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your scheduled time. The RT-130 Annual Refresher will be

1230 – 1630.

The pack test is a 3-mile hike, wearing a 45-pound pack that needs to be completed in 45 minutes. It is

recommended that participants take part in some sort of physical fitness training prior to taking the pack

test. Only individuals that intend to participate in out-of-state fire crews will be taking the test.

Quail Forever Banquet: The Chesapeake Bay Chapter of Quail Forever has some fantastic volunteers working to advance habitat improvement across the region and have been great partners in my educational work. Please consider supporting them by joining their annual banquet on Saturday, February 22, at 3pm, on Kent Island. Their funds stay within the region, so this is a great way to support local habitat work for quail.

Trevor Project CARE Training: The Trevor Project’s CARE (Connect, Accept, Respond, Empower) Training is an interactive and intensive training that provides adults with an overview of suicide among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer & questioning (LGBTQ) youth, and the different environmental stressors that contribute to their heightened risk for suicide. You will also learn about suicide risk factors and warning signs, crisis response strategies, and ways to create supportive, resilience-building environments.

Trevor Project Ally Training: This cultural competency training is designed to create dialogue around being an adult ally for LGBTQ+ youth by informing participants about common terminology, The Trevor Project's services, LGBTQ+ terminology, allyship, challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals, strategies for fostering inclusivity, cultural awareness, and supportive environments. Learn to be an Ally to the LGBTQ+ community.

Managing Organizational Change
March 13th
This course is designed to provide public safety managers and supervisors with the tools to manage planned change in their teams and organizations. Participants will examine techniques to produce behavior that enables change, and strategies and models for dealing with resistance to change. This course stresses the role of communication in managing orderly change. Topics to be covered include Three-Phase Transition Model of Change, leadership tasks and responsibilities, change communication strategies, identifying and managing resistance to change, and change implementation tools.

Employee Engagement & Motivation
March 18th
This course for managers and supervisors is designed to provide instruction on how to engage employees in a way that will motivate and retain them, and contribute to a successful work environment. Topics to be covered include the importance of engagement, types of motivation, rewards and recognition, motivating remote employees to keep them focused and engaged, and interpersonal relationships.

Customer Service
March 31st
This course is designed to enable public safety practitioners to learn to deal directly with customers. The course will examine a methodology for handling customer objections and the skills required to provide solutions to service issues and problems with upset individuals. Topics to be covered include types of difficult customers, assessing customer discontent, strategies for dealing with upset customers, and balancing organization and customer interests.

Communication Skills and Interpersonal Interaction
April 1st
This course focuses on understanding and improving the communication and interpersonal skills central to a supervisor’s effective interactions with their subordinates, peers and management. A model of the communication process is presented and selected communication skills are explored. A personality profile instrument is introduced, and the concept of personality type and its applications in improving interpersonal effectiveness are examined.

April 8th
This course is designed to assist managers in developing the knowledge and skills to use the DiSC personality profile instrument to promote individual growth and group effectiveness. Topics to be covered include personality, personality assessment, the DiSC instrument, personal profile, DiSC patterns, using DiSC to promote individual development, and using DiSC to promote group effectiveness.

Managing Across Generations
April 14th
This course is designed to explore the needs of the multi-generational workforce, with a focus on differences between generations to improve understanding and workplace productivity. Topics include: workplace attitudes and expectations, generational values, power structures and hierarchy, and managing multiple generations in the workplace.

Transitioning from Officer to Supervisor
April 15th
This course is designed to assist law enforcement and public safety personnel with the opportunity to obtain an understanding of the new responsibilities, liabilities, and the changes that come with the conversion from officers to supervisors. Topics to be covered include: the principles of leadership, team building inside and outside of the facilities, problem resolution and decision making, and new responsibilities.

Coaching for Enhanced Performance
April 29th
This course is designed to enable the student to learn approaches and techniques for business coaching to enhance employee job performance that they can apply in their position as a manager or supervisor. Topics to be covered include: coaching versus training, coaching cycles, goal setting, coaching relationships, and the importance of communication.
