 MPS Training Division In-Service Training Opportunities

October 17th - Altec Training

Location: Martinak

During the class we provide training on the safe operation of your Altec unit based on OSHA regulations, ANSI Standards, and our manufacturer recommendations. Each class can hold up to 15 students and traditionally runs 8am - 4pm.

October 21st and 22nd - Tree Risk Assessment Class

Location: New Germany State Park

(Formerly Hazardous Tree Assessment). This class will be led by folks from the Forest Service team and will cover how to determine tree health and risks and how to evaluate the next steps once the trees are identified. If you have taken this class in the past, you may want to consider a refresher as there will be new material presented!

October 23rd and 24th - Leadership Workshop 

Location: New Germany State Park

This session is designed for folks who are field supervisors (Leads, Asst. Mgrs., Managers, Maint. Sups, etc) with the goal of learning new skills and ideas in leading employees while also getting to know your fellow MPS leaders. Hopefully the class topics and activities will give insight into better management and motivation to your home park team.

October 25th - Portable Sawmill Operation and Training

Location: New Germany State Park

Our Forestry Partners are bringing a portable sawmill to New Germany to show us what potential and value there is in using these mills.  Along with the Forestry Staff, Kendall Mott from Seneca Creek (where we have a similar sawmill) will demonstrate and discuss opportunities these mills can create at your facility.  If you have some logs at your park you might want to mill, please coordinate that with John Ohler on ideal dimensions for your logs.

October 28th and 29th - Heavy Equipment Training

Location: Wolf Den Run

This training will teach beginner through intermediate skills in heavy equipment operation using actual hands-on operation of the equipment. Topics include the safe and efficient use of loaders, excavators, backhoes, dozers, and/or skid steer loaders to load trucks, move palletized material, pick up and move debris, dig, backfill, and move piles.

November 19th - 26th - Emergency Medical Responder

Location: Pocomoke River State Park

The Emergency Medical Response (EMR) program is an entry-level course designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to perform pre-hospital assessment and care for patients suffering from a variety of sudden illnesses and traumatic injuries. Hands on skills practice and evaluation will include airway management, cardiac emergencies (including American Red Cross Basic Life Support training), treatment of shock, wound care, injuries to muscles and bones, and lifting/moving patients.

Maryland in the Movement: Resources for Teaching Civil Rights in the Classroom

Friday, October 18

Governor Wes Moore declared 2024 to be the Year of Civil Rights in Maryland. 

MCHC welcomes educators at any level to join us and learn about the many unique stories represented in the Passion & Purpose: Voices of Civil Rights Activists exhibition, from activist luminaries like Thurgood Marshall and Gloria Richardson to Dr. Lillie Carroll Jackson and Judge Robert M. Bell.

Participating teachers will tour the exhibition with MCHC education staff and Marcus Sankofa Nicks, founder of History Heals Consulting LLC, as well as handle original materials from the MCHC Library collection, and leave with materials to support classroom instruction. Registration is required.

Maryland Costal Training Program

Planning for Coastal Flood Impacts

October 18 and 23

The Maryland Coastal Training Program is pleased to announce we will be hosting Planning for Coastal Flood Impacts on Oct 18th and Oct 23rd. 

In this two hour training, participants will: 

• Develop a common understanding of coastal flood impacts and sea level rise and utilize Maryland specific resources.
• Understand the MD Nuisance Flood Plan mandate (October 2025), learn about the updated recommendations and determine how those apply to your jurisdiction.
• Become familiar with the Maryland 2023 Sea Level Rise Projections and how to use the 2024 MD Sea Level Rise Guidance Document to plan for future impacts.
• Explore case studies to understand, plan, and implement projects to reduce the impacts of coastal flood risk
• Understand potential funding sources to plan for and implement projects that address current and future flood impacts.

C&O Canal Weekend Expedition

Discover the history and natural beauty of the C&O Canal on this two-day expedition to the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park and Great Falls Park. The C&O Canal was a lifeline for communities for almost 100 years as coal, lumber, and agricultural products were floated down the 185-mile-long waterway to market. The canal was built to connect the tidewater on the Potomac River in DC with the headwaters of the Ohio River in western Pennsylvania.

Amphibians 101

Cost: $85

Amphibians (frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, efts, and caecilians) are incredibly diverse and incredibly imperiled. According to the IUCN, 43% of the world’s amphibians are in catastrophic decline or already extinct, more than birds and mammals combined.

This course will cover:

• basic amphibian biology
• anatomy
• conservation and emerging fungal threats
• captive care and housing from basic to advanced

Special emphasis will be placed on the amphibians native to Maryland. The course is designed to support professional animal care staff, nature center staff, and amateur herpetologists, although it is open to anyone interested in amphibians.
