Taking Care of Us Roundtable Event & New Taking Care of Us Webpage Recent data highlights significant disparities in suicide rates across different racial, ethnic, and age groups. Particularly concerning are the sharp increases in suicide rates among young Black individuals aged 10–24. These trends underscore the need for targeted prevention efforts and increased support for vulnerable populations. In response to this concerning data, our office created a campaign called "Taking Care of Us". We aim to raise awareness and implement targeted strategies in suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention for Black and Brown communities. Included in this campaign are monthly meetings with stakeholders from the Black and Brown Community that inform initiatives and resource creation, an educational campaign in February highlighting Trailblazers within the community, and an annual event called the Taking Care of Us Roundtable. This free, virtual gathering will center on the unique challenges and successes of Black and Brown Youth, exploring research, data-driven insights, and best practices. This year, we are launching a new permanent Taking Care of Us webpage highlighting these issues and offering resources. Hosted in collaboration with the Maryland Office of Suicide Prevention, the Maryland Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities, and the Black Mental Health Alliance, this year's Taking Care of Us event will foster meaningful discussions and actionable takeaways with an emphasis on Black and Brown youth communities. This year's title is "Legacy of Strength: Building a Path to Wellness." |
