Maryland Forest Service
There are only a few places in Maryland where you can see the habitats needed to support wildlife like northern bobwhite quail, as well as rare and endangered species like tiger beetles and frosted elfin butterflies... It's part of why quail and certain butterflies disappear across so much of the state... On this field trip, you can see first hand how these rare habitats are created and maintained. Specifically, you'll be able to see what a forest looks like after it's been logged and burned. You'll be surprised! Folks from The Nature Conservancy, Maryland Forest Service, and Tall Timbers will show examples and discuss the following management techniques at 10 different stops around the 10,000-acre Nassawango Creek Preserve: - Forest thinning and burning and the effect of season
- Variable density thinning to create structural diversity
- Selective clear cutting & burning for hardwood regeneration
- Open oak and pine savanna
- Young pine management – mixed severity burning for structural enhancement
Cost: Free Date & Time: Wednesday, July 9, 10am - 3pm Location: 10,000-acre Nassawango Creek Preserve Click here to register to attend. Limited to 40. Organized by the Maryland Prescribed Fire Council and The Nature Conservancy. Looking forward to seeing some of you there! Luke p.s. TLDR, click here to register. Forwarded this email?
