Description: The Trail Development & Operations Institute is a multi-day, immersive experience that blends classroom learning with hands-on fieldwork. Set within Oglebay’s unique indoor and outdoor learning environments, participants gain practical insight from seasoned trail professionals. Whether planning new trails or maintaining established systems, communities will find guidance for every stage of the journey. Recognizing that trail systems are managed from both a leadership and field perspective, this program offers dedicated tracks for Supervisor/Director and Field Management/Maintenance roles. While core concepts are shared, each group engages in tailored learning—both in the classroom and out on the trail—building the specific skills and confidence needed for their work. Each track is grounded in nationally recognized, NOCTI-approved Core Competencies for Trail Management, enhanced by real-world case studies and decades of on-the-ground experience. Learning Outcomes:

- Outline the phases of trail development: planning, design, construction, and maintenance
- Understand the principles of sustainable trail design and visitor management via trails
- Understand the resources available with the trail industry and typical processes(best practices?) for trail development and redevelopment
- Conduct trail assessments and implement drainage and erosion control solutions
- Understand trail tread failure causes and a variety of tread stabilization techniques
- Identify visitor conflict causes and apply mitigation techniques during design and maintenance.
- Describe current trail construction best practices and the spectrum of available tools and techniques
- Apply and understand the different types of trail signage and wayfinding and how to apply them on their home trails
- Understand current best practices for visitor and land owner risk management for open space and assumed risk activities
- Develop activation strategies: programming, marketing, volunteer engagement, hospitality
- Draft an action plan tailored to their local trail project
